Film Round-Up 2022
SF SHORTS STAFF . OCTOBER 2022
Watching our 2022 slate of films reveals a bigger picture of themes seeking answers to universal mysteries. A mythos questioning order and chaos pervades. One of the things that films do best is to take you where you couldn’t otherwise go, whether through physical location or within the psychology of another. Short films in particular have the advantage of a more direct filmmaker vision, unencumbered by the compromises of larger productions; and they provide a glimpse into the future directions and players of storytelling. Making an independent work of art requires incredible dedication. We commend the following films.

0.2 Milligrams of Gold
Reveals a deeper understanding of our micro and macro cosms by artfully transforming the science documentary through the compared scopes of man, culture, and nature.

534 West Washington Street
A spot-on portrait of chaos. You have known this guy and cringed before the draw of his bluster.

Ang Motel
A film as deceivingly simple as the quiet humanity shown when strangers become conjoined by chance in transit.

Concertina
To watch this film is to expose oneself to the primal conjurings of mythic parallel surrealities.

Crusoe Of Tin City
An extraordinary immersion into remoteness, between elegy and ode.

Eureka
Grimly gorgeous as delicacy is caged by terror.

Frida
A masterful nuance balancing the limitations of procedure with the bare longing for intimacy.

GATHERING SPEED
An empowering release from rote antiseptic toil.

How To Lose Weight and Look Great
If a film could be a friend, we’d want this one.

I LIED ABOUT BEING AN ARTIST
A brilliant example of making art with what you’ve got.

IQALUIT
A raw and authentic film that makes you feel like you are witnessing future greatness.

Mammarranca
A dreamy evocative tale where, to child scamps in a dying economy, a simple object can not only entertain a day but might also balance the scales of justice as a curse and a talisman.

Night/Line
A hypnotic immersive surveillance, challenging human packaging.

Parallax
A masterwork of such epic sentiment and dedication, that it should be preserved in a museum and sent into space.

Sandstorm
A clever and beautiful film that cautions the seduction of modernism.

Sunday
A beautiful synthesis of borrowed nostalgia.

Sweetheart
A writhing and lofty amorous orchestration.

Tangent 61
An evocative proposition, in sound and light, that our fundamental universe may be the breaking and fusing within an entropic symphony.

Telos or Bust
A beguiling documentary that will entice you to the secret utopia in our own backyard.

The Art of Avila Rose
A delightful portrait of the demands and rewards in maintaining a small-shop craft.

The Brother Mike Tapes
We could watch this forever.

The Many Benefits of Heartbreak
A raw and admirable metaphilosophic pondering, wherein its truth and intent are ironically and cleverly supported by inconsistent production techniques.

There's a Bison on The Prairie
It is hard to look away from this charming barrage of instinctive killing.

Uqi
It serves the cool-aid. A masterful indoctrination. Generations will be grateful.
